Ofelia Botella

Painting | Murals

Ofelia Botella is a Spanish artist and illustrator. Her joyful and vibrant works explores narratives of humans’ relationship to nature, mythology and folk tales, and looks to connect with previous generations of artisans by exploring traditional female craftsmanship.

A self-taught artist, Ofelia has a background in art history. She graduated from a masters degree in Contemporary Chinese Art History at the Courtauld institute of Art in London. Unable to leave the vibrant art scene she still lives and works in London but escapes to her hometown Madrid whenever she has a chance.

Ofelia works mainly in gouache, though she enjoys experimenting with other techniques such as linocut printing. She has many sources of inspiration but her love of traditional textiles and embroidery is one of the main connecting threads throughout her work. The daughter of a fashion designer, she grew up surrounded by vintage textiles and has always been fascinated by the traditionally female crafts of rug making, embroidery and fabric dyeing. The body of work available at Brushes with Greatness shows studies of small Romanian Kilim rugs or traditional embroidery  from Ukraine and evolve into larger landscape pieces inspired by the textile aesthetic and her own travels.
